Martin Dubravka - Best Saves 2019/2020
Martin Dúbravka, born on January 15, 1989, in Žilina, Slovakia, is an experienced professional goalkeeper. Standing at 1.90 meters (6 ft 3 in), he is known for his agility, shot-stopping abilities, and excellent footwork. His journey in football began at his hometown club, MŠK Žilina, where he progressed through their youth ranks and eventually made his senior debut. He won two Slovak Super Liga titles and the Slovak Super Cup with Žilina, and also featured in the UEFA Champions League.
Dúbravka's career then took him to various European clubs. In January 2014, he moved to Denmark's Esbjerg fB, spending two and a half seasons in the Danish Superliga. Following his stint in Denmark, he returned to Central Europe, joining Slovan Liberec in the Czech First League. His impressive performances there attracted the attention of Sparta Prague, the Czech capital's most successful club, which he joined in June 2017.
In January 2018, Dúbravka made a significant move to the Premier League, joining Newcastle United on an initial loan deal from Sparta Prague. He made an immediate impact, keeping a clean sheet on his debut against Manchester United. His strong displays in his first six months at St. James' Park convinced Newcastle to make his move permanent in the summer of 2018 for a reported fee of £4.3 million. He quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper, even lining up in 88 consecutive Premier League games for the Magpies.
During his time at Newcastle, Dúbravka established himself as a fan favorite and a key player. He consistently delivered strong performances, making numerous crucial saves and contributing to the team's Premier League stability. His efforts were recognized when he was named the North East Football Writers Association Player of the Year in 2018.
In September 2022, Dúbravka had a brief loan spell at Manchester United. However, his time at Old Trafford was limited, making only two appearances, both in the Carabao Cup. He was recalled by Newcastle United in January 2023, returning to St. James' Park.
Martin Dúbravka's latest situation at Manchester United and Newcastle United:
Upon his return to Newcastle, Dúbravka initially served as backup to Nick Pope. However, due to Pope's injury, Dúbravka stepped back into the starting lineup for a significant portion of the 2023-2024 season. He made 30 appearances across all competitions that season, including 23 in the Premier League. He demonstrated his continued value to the squad, even earning a Premier League Save of the Month award in December 2024.
Dúbravka recently signed a new contract extension with Newcastle United on February 20, 2025. This new deal reportedly extends his stay at the club until June 30, 2026. This commitment from both the player and the club highlights his importance, particularly as an experienced option in their goalkeeping unit.
Internationally, Dúbravka is the established number one goalkeeper for the Slovakian national team. He made his full international debut in May 2014 and has since accumulated 50 caps. He was an ever-present for Slovakia at the UEFA Euro 2020 finals (played in 2021) and was also part of their squad for UEFA Euro 2024.
Dúbravka is known for his "sweeper-keeper" style of play, which involves strong footwork and an ability to play with the ball at his feet, not just kicking it long. He is adept at commanding his area and making decisive interventions. Despite sometimes playing as an outfielder in training and admitting his favorite position is right wing, his commitment to goalkeeping has made him a respected figure in the sport.
