Vincent Aboubakar, born on January 22, 1992, in Garoua, Cameroon, is a highly experienced and prolific striker known for his powerful presence and goal-scoring ability. His football journey began at Coton Sport in Cameroon, where he quickly showcased his talent before making a move to European football in 2010, marking the start of a long and varied club career across multiple leagues.
His initial foray into European football saw him join French Ligue 1 side Valenciennes in 2010. Over three seasons, he made 72 league appearances, scoring 9 goals. Following this, he moved to Lorient in 2013, where he enjoyed a breakout season, scoring 16 goals in 35 Ligue 1 appearances, which significantly raised his profile and attracted attention from bigger clubs.
In 2014, Aboubakar made a significant step up, signing with Portuguese giants FC Porto. During his initial stint at Porto, he became a crucial part of their attack, scoring consistently and contributing to their domestic campaigns. He played 83 league games for Porto, netting 36 goals, and also gained valuable UEFA Champions League experience, scoring 13 goals in 21 appearances across various stints with the club.
His time at Porto was punctuated by two successful loan spells and later permanent transfers to Turkish club Beşiktaş. His first loan spell in the 2016-17 season saw him win the Süper Lig title, scoring 12 goals in 27 league appearances. He returned to Beşiktaş for another impactful period between 2020 and 2021, winning another Süper Lig title and the Turkish Cup. He then rejoined Beşiktaş for a third time from January 2023 to September 2024, continuing his strong goal-scoring form.
Between his second and third stints at Beşiktaş, Aboubakar moved to Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr in July 2021. He spent a season and a half in Saudi Arabia, making 34 appearances and scoring 12 goals before his contract was mutually terminated in January 2023, paving the way for his return to Turkey. His time at Al Nassr also briefly saw him as a teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Aboubakar's playing style is defined by his physical strength, which allows him to hold up the ball effectively and challenge defenders. He combines this power with intelligent movement, often making runs into dangerous areas, and a clinical finishing ability with his right foot. He is also known for his aerial prowess and leadership on the field.
On the international stage, Vincent Aboubakar has been a stalwart for the Cameroon national team, captaining the side and becoming one of their most prolific goalscorers. He made his senior international debut in May 2010 and has earned over 110 caps, scoring 45 goals, making him the second-highest scorer in the history of the national team.
He has represented Cameroon in multiple major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cups in 2010, 2014, and 2022, and several Africa Cup of Nations editions (2015, 2017, 2021, and 2023). A defining moment in his international career was scoring the winning goal in the final of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, and he was the top goalscorer in the 2021 edition with 8 goals in 7 games. As of May 9, 2025, Aboubakar terminated his contract with Hatayspor by mutual agreement and is currently without a club.
