Klaas-Jan Huntelaar - Best Skills and Goals
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is a highly respected former Dutch professional footballer, primarily known for his prolific goalscoring ability as a striker. Throughout his career, he developed a reputation as a clinical finisher, often referred to as "The Hunter" due to his predatory instincts in front of goal. His excellent positioning, powerful shots, and aerial prowess made him a consistent threat in the penalty area for every club he represented.
Huntelaar's journey in professional football began in the Netherlands, progressing through the youth ranks of PSV Eindhoven before making his senior debut. He had loan spells at De Graafschap and AGOVV Apeldoorn, where he started to showcase his goalscoring potential. His impressive performances for AGOVV, where he was named the Eerste Divisie Player of the Year in 2003-04 with 26 goals, earned him a move to Heerenveen.
It was at Ajax where Huntelaar truly burst onto the European stage. Joining in 2006, he quickly became a fan favorite, consistently topping the scoring charts in the Eredivisie. He was the Eredivisie's top goalscorer in both the 2005-06 and 2007-08 seasons, with 33 goals in each. During his initial spell at Ajax (2006-2009), he netted a remarkable 76 league goals in 92 appearances and a total of 158 goals in 257 appearances across all competitions over two periods with the club. He also won three Dutch Cups and two Dutch Super Cups with Ajax.
His prolific form in the Netherlands attracted the attention of European giants, leading to a move to Real Madrid in January 2009. While his time in Spain was relatively brief, he still managed to score 8 goals in 20 La Liga appearances during the 2008-2009 season. Following this, he moved to AC Milan in August 2009, where he scored 7 goals in 25 Serie A appearances in the 2009-2010 season.
Huntelaar then embarked on a highly successful seven-year spell at Schalke 04 in the German Bundesliga, joining them in August 2010. This period arguably represents the peak of his career. He was the top goalscorer in the Bundesliga in the 2011-2012 season with 29 league goals, and he remains Schalke's second-highest goalscorer of all time. Overall, he scored 84 goals in 184 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke and 128 goals in 249 appearances across all competitions. He also won a DFB-Pokal and a German Super Cup with the club.
Internationally, Huntelaar was a prominent figure for the Netherlands national team. He earned 76 caps and scored 42 goals, making him one of the country's all-time leading goalscorers. He represented the Netherlands in two FIFA World Cups (2010, where they were runners-up, and 2014, where they finished third) and two UEFA European Championships (2008 and 2012). He was also part of the Dutch U21 side that won the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, where he was the top scorer and player of the tournament.
After his successful tenure at Schalke, Huntelaar returned to Ajax in 2017 for a second spell, continuing to contribute goals and experience to the team. He won two more Eredivisie titles with Ajax in 2018-2019 and 2020-2021, and another Dutch Cup in 2018-2019, adding to his impressive list of club honors. He retired from professional football on July 1, 2021.
Post-retirement, Huntelaar has transitioned into football management and advisory roles. He served as the Technical Director for Ajax from September 2023 to March 2025, and also held roles as Ajax U21 Technical Director and Advisor of Management. His rich playing career and extensive knowledge of the game make him a valuable asset in his post-playing career.
