Kelvin Wangaya - Skills, Goals and Assists

Kelvin Injehu Wangaya, born on November 30, 2005, is a promising Kenyan footballer who operates primarily as a midfielder. His journey in football began at a young age within the youth ranks of Ligi Ndogo SC in Kenya. This early exposure to structured football provided the foundation for his technical development and instilled a passion for the game that would see him progress quickly through various age-group teams.

Wangaya's talent soon became evident, leading him to join the FKF Centre of Excellence from 2019 to 2020, a significant step in his youth career. This period allowed him to refine his skills and tactical understanding in a more specialized environment, preparing him for the demands of senior football. His progression through these academies highlighted his dedication and the recognition of his potential by footballing authorities in Kenya.

He made his professional debut with Ligi Ndogo SC in the 2020-2021 season, though he didn't make any league appearances during this initial stint. His breakthrough at the senior club level came with a move to Kenyan Premier League side Kariobangi Sharks in 2022. Over two seasons with the Sharks, from 2022 to 2024, Wangaya made 15 appearances, scoring 2 goals, which marked his increasing involvement in competitive senior matches.

In January 2024, Wangaya ventured into European football with a short stint at FK Apolonia Fier, a second-tier club in Albania. During his time there, he made 5 appearances. This move offered him valuable experience in a different footballing culture and environment, contributing to his development as a player. However, his stay was brief, as he returned to Ligi Ndogo SC in 2024.

On the international stage, Kelvin Wangaya has been a consistent presence in Kenya's youth national teams. He has represented his country at various levels, including the U15 (6 caps, 3 goals), U17 (4 caps, 2 goals), and U18 (6 caps, 3 goals) national teams. These experiences provided him with crucial exposure to international competition and the opportunity to test his abilities against peers from other nations.

Most notably, Wangaya has been a key player for the Kenya U20 national team, having made 9 appearances and scoring 5 goals as of May 14, 2025. He was an integral part of the Kenya U20 squad that participated in the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. In this tournament, he scored a goal against Nigeria and was notably named Man of the Match for his performance, also earning a spot in the group stage best eleven.

His playing style is characterized by his role as a central or attacking midfielder. Wangaya is known for his ability to dictate tempo from midfield, break pressing lines with direct carries, and execute incisive passes under pressure. His set-piece delivery, particularly on corner kicks and free-kicks, is a significant asset to his teams. He is described as a press-resistant operator with technical quality and composure.

Kelvin Wangaya's journey from a youth academy product to a national youth team standout and a player with European experience highlights his promising potential. While still in the early stages of his career, his performances, especially for the Kenya U20 team, have garnered attention and position him as one of Kenya's bright footballing prospects with aspirations to reach higher levels in the sport.
