Jonah Ananias Paul Ayunga, born on May 24, 1997, in Beaminster, England, is a powerful forward who represents the Kenya national team. His early footballing development took place in England, notably with Bridport Youth. Ayunga's initial steps in senior football were in the non-league scene, playing for clubs like Dorchester Town, where his physical attributes and goal-scoring potential began to emerge.
His performances at Dorchester Town attracted the attention of professional clubs, leading to a move to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2016. While he didn't make a senior appearance for Brighton, he featured for their U23 side and gained further experience through various loan spells. These loans, to clubs like Burgess Hill Town, Sligo Rovers in Ireland, and Galway United, provided him with valuable first-team exposure and helped him adapt to different styles of play.
After his time at Brighton, Ayunga continued his journey through the English lower leagues, featuring for Sutton United and Havant & Waterlooville. It was during his second spell at Havant & Waterlooville in the 2019-2020 season that he truly hit a prolific vein of form, scoring 17 goals in 30 league appearances, showcasing his ability to lead the line and find the back of the net consistently.
This impressive goal-scoring record earned him a move to Bristol Rovers in League One in 2020. He spent a season there, making 30 league appearances and contributing to their attacking play. Following his spell at Bristol Rovers, he moved to Morecambe in 2021, where he continued to play in League One, adding 6 goals in 36 appearances during the 2021-22 season.
In July 2022, Ayunga made the switch to Scottish Premiership side St Mirren. This move saw him step up to top-flight football in Scotland, a new challenge in his career. He quickly made an impact for the Buddies, establishing himself as a key forward. He's known for his hold-up play, aerial presence, and direct running, which complement St Mirren's attacking strategies.
His time at St Mirren has seen him contribute important goals and assists, even as he has battled back from a significant cruciate knee injury. Despite the setback, he has shown resilience and determination to regain his form. His manager, Stephen Robinson, has praised his potential and the attributes he brings to the team, highlighting his importance to the squad.
Recently, in April 2025, St Mirren confirmed that Jonah Ayunga had agreed a new one-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2026. This extension underlines his value to the team and the club's desire to retain his services as they aim to continue their strong performances in the Scottish Premiership.
On the international stage, Jonah Ayunga represents the Kenya national team. He made his senior debut for the Harambee Stars in March 2024 and scored his first international goal in a draw against Zimbabwe in November 2024. His presence adds a physical and direct attacking option to the Kenyan national side, making him a growing figure in African international football.
