Nathan Tjoe-A-On New 2023 Skills
Nathan Noël Romejo Tjoe-A-On, born on December 22, 2001, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, is a professional footballer who primarily plays as a left-back or defensive midfielder. As of early July 2025, he is a free agent, having recently concluded his contract with Swansea City. He is also a significant member of the Indonesian national team. His journey in football has seen him develop through Dutch academies before moving to English and then returning to Dutch football on loan, showcasing his adaptability.
Tjoe-A-On began his youth career at VV Nieuwerkerk before joining Excelsior in 2013, where he progressed through their youth system. He signed a three-year professional contract with Excelsior in 2019. Despite some early injury setbacks that affected his development, he returned to action and gained confidence, making his Eredivisie debut in August 2022 and scoring his first professional league goal in September 2022.
In August 2023, Tjoe-A-On made a move to English football, signing a three-year deal with Championship club Swansea City for an undisclosed fee. However, his time at Swansea City proved challenging, as he found playing time limited, making only a few appearances for the club.
Due to a lack of playing minutes at Swansea, Tjoe-A-On was loaned to SC Heerenveen in the Eredivisie in January 2024 for the remainder of the 2023-2024 season. During this loan spell, he made his debut for Heerenveen in February 2024. Despite the loan, he also struggled to secure regular playing time there. Upon the conclusion of his loan, he returned to Swansea City.
Recently, on June 18, 2025, Swansea City announced that Nathan Tjoe-A-On was leaving the club after his contract was terminated by mutual agreement. This means he is currently without a club, with reports suggesting he is now focusing on his commitments with the Indonesian national team while considering his next move.
A pivotal moment in Nathan Tjoe-A-On's career was his decision to represent Indonesia at the international level. He officially obtained Indonesian citizenship on March 11, 2024, a process that involved taking an oath immediately upon his arrival in Indonesia to meet registration deadlines for international matches. He has Indonesian descent from his maternal grandfather, who was born in Semarang, Central Java.
He made his senior international debut for Indonesia on March 21, 2024, in a 1-0 victory against Vietnam in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Since then, he has become a regular feature for the Indonesian national team, making 12 appearances for the senior squad as of March 20, 2025. He also represented the Indonesia U23 team, participating in the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup.
Nathan Tjoe-A-On's playing style is characterized by his ability to play as a left-back and, at times, as a defensive midfielder. He is known for his calm and mature approach to the game. While perhaps not as explosive in attack as some other left-backs, his experience at the elite level of European football makes him a valuable and composed presence on the field for the Indonesian national team.
