Real Madrid Overcome Adversity to Beat Pachuca 3-1 in Club World Cup
Real Madrid put on a dominant display in the FIFA Club World Cup group stage as they defeated Mexican side Pachuca 3-1 despite being reduced to ten men early in the match. The game, held at the King Abdullah Sports City on June 22, 2025, showed the Spanish giants' resilience and depth under manager Xabi Alonso, who continues to impress in his first season in charge.
The match began with drama in just the 7th minute when Marco Asensio was shown a straight red card for bringing down a Pachuca attacker during a counterattack. The decision left Madrid a man down for the rest of the game, and for a brief spell, Pachuca looked ready to exploit the numerical advantage. Thibaut Courtois was called into action soon after, making a vital save that prevented the Mexican side from taking an early lead.
Despite the disadvantage, Real Madrid remained composed and adapted their shape. Their breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Jude Bellingham found space at the top of the box and fired a low, driven shot into the bottom corner to give Madrid the lead. The assist came from Gonzalo García, who had a superb outing in midfield, constantly linking defense with attack.
Just before halftime, Madrid doubled their advantage through Arda Güler. Once again, García was involved, playing a clever through-ball into the box that Güler controlled expertly before slotting it past the keeper. The 2-0 lead at halftime was a remarkable turnaround considering they had played nearly 40 minutes with only ten men.
In the second half, Madrid continued to control the tempo and limited Pachuca’s opportunities. Their third goal arrived in the 70th minute, courtesy of Federico Valverde. The Uruguayan midfielder finished off a well-worked move from the edge of the area, sending a chip over the keeper after receiving a cut-back pass. It was a goal that showcased Madrid’s attacking quality even under pressure.
Pachuca managed a consolation goal in the 80th minute through Erick Montiel. A loose ball in the penalty area fell to Montiel, who smashed it past Courtois to give his side a glimmer of hope. But Madrid’s defense stood firm in the final ten minutes, calmly seeing out the game without further incident.
The victory puts Real Madrid in a strong position heading into their final group match against RB Salzburg on June 27. Xabi Alonso’s team showed tactical discipline, mental toughness, and attacking flair, despite the early setback. With key players like Bellingham, Valverde, and García in top form, Madrid look poised to make a deep run in this year’s FIFA Club World Cup.
