Chelsea advanced to the Club World Cup semi-finals after a tense 2-1 victory over a determined Palmeiras side at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday. The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute when a Malo Gusto cross deflected off a Palmeiras defender and then goalkeeper Weverton, resulting in an unfortunate own goal that sealed the win for the Blues.

The London club had initially taken the lead in the first half through a superb goal from Cole Palmer. This hard-fought win sets up an intriguing semi-final clash against another Brazilian team, Fluminense, in New York on Tuesday, with a coveted spot in the final hanging in the balance.

However, Palmeiras, displaying admirable spirit, roared back into the game after halftime. Their equalizer came in the 53rd minute courtesy of teenage winger Estêvão, who is set to join Chelsea in the future. His stunning strike from a tight angle showcased remarkable talent and brought the Brazilian side level.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged the difficulty of the match, stating, "Tough game as we expected. First half, I think we were a little bit better compared to the second half, we controlled the game much better." He added, "But then they scored and the game changed but at the end we scored and I think we deserved to win. Congratulations to the players, because they have been very good."

Despite missing key defensive midfielders Moisés Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, Chelsea started the match strongly, with 21-year-old Andrey Santos making his first start for the club more than two and a half years after signing. They dominated possession and frequently threatened the Palmeiras defense, particularly through Pedro Neto, who was a constant menace on the right flank.

Palmer’s opening goal in the 16th minute was a moment of individual brilliance. He received a pass from Trevoh Chalobah at the edge of the box, effortlessly glided past three defenders, and then dispatched a precise left-footed strike into the bottom corner of the net, giving Chelsea the lead.

Despite their early dominance, Chelsea squandered several opportunities to extend their lead. A notable miss came in the 34th minute when Christopher Nkunku blasted over with only Weverton to beat, highlighting a period where the Blues could have put the game out of reach.

Palmeiras, who were also without key defenders Joaquin Piquerez, Gustavo Gómez, and Murilo, struggled to contain Chelsea's fluid attacking play in the first half. However, they emerged from the break with renewed vigor and a clear intent to get back into the match, pushing Chelsea onto the back foot. Their equalizer, a spectacular effort from Estevao, was a strong contender for goal of the tournament. The 18-year-old skillfully cut in from the right, bypassed Levi Colwill, and unleashed an unstoppable shot from a tight angle that soared over goalkeeper Robert Sánchez and clipped the underside of the crossbar before going in.

Just as Palmeiras appeared to be at their most dangerous and pushing for a potential winner, Chelsea found their decisive moment at the other end. Malo Gusto found space on the left flank, and his attempted cross took a significant deflection off defender Bruno Fuchs. This unexpected change of direction completely wrong-footed Weverton, with the ball bouncing off the goalkeeper's back and into the net. This unfortunate own goal extinguished Palmeiras' dreams of an all-Brazilian semi-final in the tournament.
