Vietnam vs Indonesia - World Cup Qualifiers 2026 R2

In a commanding performance at My Dinh Stadium, Indonesia secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Vietnam in their Preliminary Joint Qualification – Round 2 match for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™. This triumph, achieved on Tuesday, marked a significant milestone for the Indonesian squad, as it was their first win on Vietnamese soil since 2004, orchestrated brilliantly by head coach Shin Tae-yong.

The "Garudas" showcased an impressive first-half display that set the tone for the entire match. This victory provided Indonesia with a crucial four-point advantage over their Southeast Asian rivals in Group F, with only two matchdays remaining. The result was a stark contrast to their previous encounter, where Indonesia had to work hard for a narrow 1-0 win at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

Indonesia wasted no time asserting their dominance in the reverse fixture. In the ninth minute, a perfectly executed corner kick from Thom Haye found Jay Idzes making a late run into the box. The Venezia FC defender rose majestically to thump a header past Vietnamese goalkeeper Nguyen Filip, giving Indonesia an early lead and stunning the home crowd.

Vietnam attempted to mount a quick response, and just two minutes later, a dangerous cross from the right found Nguyen Tien Linh in a promising position. However, his close-range header was expertly caught by Indonesia's vigilant goalkeeper, Ernando Ari, who was ready to thwart the threat.

Indonesia then doubled their lead in the 23rd minute with a moment of individual brilliance. Ragnar Oratmangoen embarked on a dazzling run into the box from the left flank, effortlessly leaving four Vietnamese defenders trailing in his wake. He then unleashed a powerful low shot into the bottom far corner of the net, extending Indonesia's advantage and further silencing the My Dinh faithful.

As the first half wore on, Vietnam had a golden opportunity to pull a goal back around the half-hour mark. Vu Van Thanh delivered a precise pass to an unmarked Tien Linh inside the box, but unfortunately for the Golden Star Warriors, Tien Linh dragged his attempt just wide of the post, squandering a chance to narrow the deficit.

Despite the halftime score, Philippe Troussier’s Vietnamese side toiled relentlessly for the first 15 minutes of the second half, desperately seeking a breakthrough. Their efforts proved futile, however, forcing the French coach to take a gamble by introducing Nguyen Van Toan and Ho Tan Tai in place of Tien Linh and Pham Xuan Manh, respectively, in an attempt to inject fresh attacking impetus.

However, these substitutions did little to alter the course of the match for the home side. Ernando Ari remained well protected by the formidable central defensive pairing of Idzes and Rizky Ridho, who consistently repelled Vietnam's attacks. To add insult to injury, Indonesia sealed their comprehensive victory deep into stoppage time when Ramadhan Sananta found the back of the net, marking the third goal and putting an emphatic end to the contest.

Looking ahead, the next set of fixtures, scheduled for June 6, will see Indonesia face an already-qualified Iraq in Jakarta. Meanwhile, Vietnam will be eager to bounce back from this significant defeat when they host the Philippines, hoping to reignite their qualification aspirations.
